Inner Mann focuses on those rural parts of the Isle of Man away from the island's six main towns and resorts. Until the end of the Second World War, many of these villages still used centuries-old farming practices and the horse was the main source of motive power. Roads were often poor and this contributed to a sense of isolation, preserving a world in which many buildings were still thatched and day-to-day life had changed relatively little in a century. Many of these areas have now been encroached upon by urban sprawl, whilst elsewhere farmhouses have been sold off and luxury homes have sprung up in formerly rural locations. The 58 pictures in this selection reflect Inner Mann in the years when it supported a large but mostly poor agricultural community, before the countryside became a dormitory for today's more prosperous inhabitants. The following parishes are illustrated: Andreas, Arbory, Ballaugh, Braddan, Bride, German, Jurby, Lezayre, Lonan, Malew, Marown, Maughold, Michael, Onchan, Patrick, Rushen and Santon.
