This new book marks the shift in Gabriele’s work since her Hand Building and Smoke Firing era (1979–2012), as recorded in the late Tony Birks’ 2009 publication with that title. The change in technique (using the kiln instead of smoke-firing with sawdust) came about from concern about the impact of her work on the environment. Still, many aspects of her newer work have their origins in the materials and her techniques from that earlier period. The book title reflects Gabriele’s inspiration from her experiences of nature. As the foreword notes, ‘she returns to her one-metre square in her studio to create work that will transform that experience into an object’.
