This town in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, was named after Dr Allen Cooke, a 17-century English ecclesiastical lawyer, who was granted land here under the Plantation Scheme. It was subsequently leased by another Plantation family, the Stewarts, who built a castle at Killymoon. In the 19th century, William Stewart had the town redeveloped, with a main street 135 feet wide and over a mile long, along with additional streets on either side. Cookstown soon became a centre of the linen industry in the county, with several factories at work, but the surrounding area was richly agricultural.

In this illustrated history, period photographs of the town’s boulevard, works, markets, and its commerical and public buildings are combined with informative captions. Events, too, are featured, including the opening of the war memorial in 1927.
