This is a bus book with a difference! It tells the true story of how the author, a Glasgow Irish lad, started working as a conductor on the buses in 1969 as a holiday job at the end of his first year at Glasgow University, where he had been reading History. It was quite a start for a boy from a good Catholic home to enter the smoke-filled, expletive-laden world of a Western SMT bus depot. But it was also a dream come true because, as a five-year-old, he had received a conductor set (he’s still got it and it’s shown in the book!) as a gift from his auntie and now he had a real one. The 18-year-old Hugh had a camera and kept a diary of his adventures on the buses, which he only recently came across again, and after removing the x-rated bits, it’s all here! The territory covered included Glasgow, Renfrewshire and Ayrshire, home of the dreaded 15 route number ‘The Last Ardrossan’. But that’s not all. At age 21, Hugh could become a driver, and his driving adventures are recounted in the last chapter.
