This illustrated history combining old photographs and informative captions features Morecambe, a much-loved seaside resort on the Lancashire coast. The town originates from 1846 when the local railway company formed a harbour close to the hamlets of Bare, Torrisholme and Poulton-le-Sands. A few years later, the railway linked up with the then-growing national network whilst steamer services developed to Ireland and Piel for Barrow-in-Furness. In 1904, a new harbour opened at Heysham, and the ferry traffic moved there, Morecambe’s becoming a shipbreaker’s yard. Meanwhile, Morecambe had become a holiday town with two piers and other attractions and thrived until the 1970s when low-cost holidays abroad ate into its market. Heysham was a quiet village nearby with an unusual attraction in the form of ancient stone coffins.
