The soldiers of the First World War returned to communities struggling to come to terms with the loss of both their young men and their illusions. The ensuing post-war period began a time of enormous change for the whole of Britain. The 1919 Housing act initiated programs which were to alter the face of small towns and villages forever. In St. Andrews a total of 498 “council” houses were completed by 1934. By 1939 this had risen to 762. There was still time for leisure and sport however and over the period of this book St. Andrews hosted the British Open Golf Championship no less than five times, in 1921, 1927, 1933, 1939 and 1946. The Great Depression of the early 30s affected St. Andrews less than industrially dependant parts of the country but in 1939, the Second World War brought massive upheaval as the big houses of the town were requisitioned and it became a military training centre. Fortunately, the St. Andrews Preservation Trust, formed in 1937 helped to ensure that heritage buildings were preserved for today’s visitors. Many of these are preserved photographically in this nostalgic compilation together with scenes and details of an era which has long past.
