Built as a planned village by the fourth Duke of Gordon, Tomintoul had 37 residential families or about 220 inhabitants in 1792. By 1842 this had grown to 530 and by the end of the 19th century, tourism, driven by the beauty of the area and the sporting opportunities, had become an important local industry. In the early 20th century the village had acquired its own tailor and shoemaker and by the end of the First World War could boast a butcher, a baker and five general stores. The main industry in the early twentieth century was honey, which paid more than farming at that time. Today in the surrounding area is a large sporting estate and of course the famous Glenlivet Distillery.
