Saint Cuthbert, who later became Bishop of Lindisfarne, was reputed to have been born in Oxton (known then as Ugston) in AD635 and to have baptised his early converts in a local holy spring. The Royal Burgh of Lauder, according to the New Statistical Account of Scotland (vol.II) existed as a kirk-town during the reign of David I (1124-53). Today this whole area has a tranquil charm, much in evidence in this picture collection, and it is a centre for tourist exploration of Edinburgh and the East Coast of Scotland.
