Gretna Green is best known for its runaway marriages, and together with Springfield is featured in twelve pages, with photographs of the blacksmith ‘priests’ and the various places where an English couple could be wed such as Gretna Hall and the Queen’s Head Hotel. What few visitors know about is the other Gretna, Gretna Township and the huge militarised zone that ranged across a large area including Dornoch and Eastriggs where the very fine Devil’s Porridge Museum tells the story of the First World War’s impact on the area and how the munitions factory and townships sprang up in 1916, and of the ‘Gretna Girls’ who willingly came from far and wide to do this very dangerous work. With so many people in a district with few entertainment facilities, and needing to let off steam, the township could get very rowdy. Included amongst the many photographs are the girls, the Union Jack Hotel, the beach (!), the rows of wooden huts, the railway in Central Avenue and more. The Quintinshill Railway Disaster is also covered as is Dornoch Village, and there are several pages about Eastriggs.
