In an area invaded by the Norse the town of Dingwall evolved from their first settlement and was made a Royal Burgh in the 13th century. Development in the 18th century resulted later in the marsh north of the town being drained and converted into a canal which enabled ships to berth in the newly-built harbour. This spurred growth, helped further by the arrival of the railways. By the Edwardian period, when many of the book’s old photographs were taken, the town had matured into a worthy county town for Ross and Cromarty. In this illustrated local history the author looks at the railway, the canal, local military activities, hotels, streets, shops and tells the story behind social history events such as the escorted by police passage through the town of German gipsies in 1907.
