Lost Industries of Kilbirnie, Beith, Dalry and the Garnock Valley
Author : John R. Hume ISBN : 9781807010164 Cover : paperback Price : £12.95
The book covers the Garnock Valley from the source of the Garnock to its confluence with the River Irvine at Irvine Harbour. In centuries past, it formed part of an important route to and from Central Scotland and the country’s south-west. When the railways came in the 1830s, industry sprang up to take advantage of the significant mineral deposits. Coal, fireclay, lime, and iron industries developed, as did manufacturing trades in linen, cotton, woollens, engineering, and furniture making. The book comprises the author’s own photographs of these industrial sites in their declining years in teh 1960s and 1970s.
Sites featured include Stoneyholm Mill, Garnock Mill, Dennyholm Mill, Nether Mill, Stoneyholm Net Works, Kilbirnie Rope Works, Glengarnock Steel Works, Glengarnock Mill, Auchingree Engine Works, Giffensmill Lime Works, Caledonian Works and more.
