Kinross-shire, the second smallest county in Scotland, is now part of the Perth & Kinross local authority but still retains its separate identity. The main towns are Kinross and Milnathort, but otherwise this is essentially a rural county comprised of much-loved small picturesque villages. The book features Kinross, Milnathort, Balgedie, Kinnesswood, Scotland Wells, Crook of Devon, Rumbling Bridge, Blairingone and Bridgend at Kelty which forms the boundary with Fife. What’s changed and what hasn’t in a then and now selection quietly tells the story of the underlying economic changes. Solid Victorian and Edwardian streets would be instantly recognisable to time-travellers from those times, but Cunningham’s Bacon Factory in Milnathort has been obliterated replaced by modern housing as has the railway station at Crook of Devon. Stewart and Smart’s garage in Milnathort on the other hand is still there, but looks a bit different today than how it did in the 1940s.
