Houston dates from 1781, a planned village built to house workers in the mills on the River Gryffe. Crosslee followed for the same reason in 1793. There was also weaving and agriculture. This collection of 48 old photographs recalls times gone by, such as when as many as 6,000 people turned up to watch the Point to Point steeplechase, the local gentry distributed bread and soup to the ‘deserving poor’, the Public School had boys only woodwork classes and girls only domestic science classes and the village its own railway station.
