Many of the events which shaped the long history of Ireland took place around this ancient town on the East coast. The battle of the Boyne was fought near here in 1690 but even before that Drogheda had suffered several sieges. The last of these, by Oliver Cromwell's forces in 1649, became infamous for its horrendous barbarity. The collection of images which make up this book is wide ranging and includes the last remaining medieval site in the town, the Lawrence Gate, once thought to be part of the original town wall. Also included is St. peter's Church in West Street, which houses the shrine of St. Oliver Plunkett, martyred at Tyburn, London in 1681 and the ruins of Mellifont Abbey, founded in 1142 by St. Malachy. Interspersed among the famous battle sites and historic buildings are more homely photographs of ordinary folk going about their business at work and leisure in the early part of the 20th century, children at play, workers celebrating Christmas at the Boyne Linen Company and a group of Butlin's workers at the Mosney Holiday Camp. All told, this is a wonderful photographic journey around this ancient region on the East Coast of Ireland.
