Known as Scotland’s most fertile plain, Carse of Gowrie, the area of alluvial ground along the Firth of Tay between Friarton, just East of Perth and Invergowrie Bay was at one time called “The Fruitful Valley”. The photographs in this book and its sister publication “Old Carse of Gowrie West” record the landscape of the Carse before the advent of poly tunnels marred its beauty. Alongside the scenic views and photographs of the many small communities at work and play are photographs of the large number of castles and mansions dotted along the length of the Carse. Included in this volume are photographs of Mylenfield House as it was in 1903, reconstructed after being severely damaged by fire in 1899, Greystane House (now the Swallow Hotel) and the imposing Castle Huntly as photographed by James Valentine in 1902 among others.
