Annbank and Mossblown were both products of the industrial coal mining which took place in Ayrshire from the mid-nineteenth century onwards. The early housing built by the mining companies for their employees was very basic. During the 1930s Annbank's original miners' rows were replaced with housing built partly by Bairds & Dalmellington (one of the coal owners), and with houses built by Ayr County Council. The village's transition during this period is dramatically documented in a variety of before, during and after photographs. Famous locals, such as the political legend James Brown and village worthy Hugh Dunlop feature, as do pictures of key locations and events in Annbank, Mossblown and the now-vanished hamlets of Burnbrae, Craighall, Tarholm and Woodside. There are photographs of local pits, and landmarks including Privick Mill, Gadgirth Bridge, Annbank brickworks, the Clarke Memorial Hall and Bogend Toll, scene of a violent murder in 1877.
