When the railway reached it in 1864, Giffnock was still a rural village with some local industry and remained so for quite some time afterwards. Coal was mined and sandstone and limestone were quarried locally, industries which benefited from the new rail connection. More importantly, the railway made commuting into Glasgow feasible, and it was the growth of Giffnock as a commuter suburb from the late nineteenth century onwards that ultimately produced the modern residential district of today. Anna Blair has included a wide variety of images in this book, covering many aspects of the social, spiritual and cultural growth of Giffnock over the past 100 years. Two pictures show the very centre of Giffnock before houses were laid out on what were then farm fields; other views focus on some of the big houses in the vicinity of the village and their fate. Eastwood Toll is shown prior to its major realignment, and elsewhere familiar locations such as Kilmarnock Road are seen prior to widening and in the days of the trams.
