Situated at a key crossing of the roads between Glasgow and Irvine and Govan and Rutherglen, a 16th century meal mill was the first landmark and the beginnings of what would become Pollokshaws. By the middle of the Industrial Revolution, the town had become a hive of activity centred around the water power which had dictated the placement of that first mill. Spinning, weaving and bleaching of cloth were the first industries but soon leather processing, pottery and paper-making, ironworks and engineering took root in ‘the shaws’. This collection of images, the earliest of which dates from the late 1800s walks you through the town and its history up to the radical changes of the 1960s high-rises which changed the landscape forever.
