Catrine in Ayshire has its origins in the late 18th century when it was a major centre of the Scottish cotton industry. John Hume came to live nearby in the summer of 1966. At that time he was a lecturer in Economic and Industrial History at the University of Strathclyde and was already well aware of Catrine’s historical significance, not least because of its association with the industrialist, philanthropist, and deeply Christian, David Dale. John realised that he had a unique opportunity to make a photographic record of the village and set about recording the streets, the shops, the pubs and the bookies, plus the industry as the New Mill (demolished 1985) was still working. Almost sixty years on John reflects how shabby and rundown Catrine had become post-war, and how the book includes a great deal that has since changed or gone. But he concludes and how the book includes a great deal that has since changed or gone. But he concludes Catrine ‘still has much of the character that I so much enjoyed all those years ago.’
