Old Stanley

Author : P J G Ransom

ISBN : 9781840336382
Cover : paperback
Price : £9.00

Stanley was one of several villages and small towns purpose built throughout Scotland in the late 18th century. They were created to reap the advantages of the fast flowing power of Scottish waterways to drive industrial machinery in the days before steam. The cotton industry was the investment opportunity of the day and huge, multi-storey spinning and weaving factories and the towns and villages to support them sprang up in otherwise unlikely rural spots which just happened to be fed by fast-flowing rivers. Today the once threatened mill buildings have been refurbished, part converted to flats and part as a museum showing the mill and the lives of the people who lived and worked there.
