Lowestoft was already the largest and richest coastal town in East Anglia by 1524 and has been variously, over the years, a major fishing port, a fashionable watering hole, a mercantile centre, railway town, beach resort and front line war zone. The writing partnership of Elizabeth and Jason Freeman has captured the excitement of the town from the beginning of the 20th century when it was a thriving herring port through the years of the First World War when Zeppelins hovered overhead to bomb the town. The photographic collection accompanying this well written history is a fascinating and eclectic mix of personal, group and action pictures including the January 1905 high tide flood, Corton church ruins, sailing fishing smacks stranded on the sandbanks in the outer harbour, opening ceremonies for the first tram in 1903 and the Zeppelin L48 which was shot down and crashed near to the town in June 1917.
