Situated within the North Pennines Area of Natural Beauty, Alston Moor is bordered by some of the highest, most remote fells of the Pennine Chain. It adjoins Northumberland to the North, Durham to the East and what was Westmorland to the South. The town of Alston was the most important settlement on the moor and was the major service centre for the lead industry of the north Pennine ore field.

Detailed photographs of Chapel Terrace, the old police station, the unveiling of the war memorial in 1922 and the busy forge and blacksmith’s in 1910 give a flavour of life in slower times while the pictures of the Victoria Temperance Hotel remind us that despite what the media tell us, alcohol misuse is not necessarily a modern problem. Later railway photographs show dramatic pictures of a runaway locomotive which left the rails at station pool in 1920 and the derailment of the 2 p.m. to Haltwhistle on 22 March 1947; no passengers were reported to be injured but a newlywed couple were late for their honeymoon in Blackpool!
