Old Lower Deeside

The area covered by Old Lower Deeside extends from the mouth of the River Dee at Aberdeen to Crathes in the west. Once served by the railway line known as the 'Royal Route', which ran along the north bank of the river, the small villages of Lower Deeside became magnets for commuters in the late nineteenth century and today are well-to-do dormitory suburbs. The pictures in this book take in the key settlements of Cults, Bieldside and Culter, as well as numerous interesting estates, ferries, and big houses on both sides of the river, many of which are not usually accessible to the public or have changed beyond recognition over the years. Among the items featured are an early ferry for those travelling to and from Torry; Gorrod & Davie's mill in Cults; the Heathcot Ferry (which operated between Bieldside and Blairs); numerous stations on the old Deeside line, including Murtle and Milltimber; Lynn Park tearooms and recreation ground in Maryculter; the May Wallie at Culter; and the hamlet of Kirton of Durris.
