The attractive village of Mansfield Woodhouse was originally rural, but from the nineteenth century many of its inhabitants operated framework knitting machines for a living. Then, in 1903, the opening of Sherwood Colliery saw a great influx of new workers and a consequent building boom to accommodate them. A railway station reached the village in 1875, and trams followed in 1906 allowing the population greater freedom of movement.
