Stenlake Publishing - Old Dunoon and Cowal

Old Dunoon and Cowal

Author : John Macleay
ISBN : 9781840332223
Cover : paperback
Price : £11.95

For years the haunt of holidaying Glaswegians, this book captures Dunoon and the Cowal peninsula in the days when tourists were delivered by steamers rather than car ferries and when a paddle in the sea and a promenade along the pier were all the ingredients needed for a great holiday. Apart from Dunoon itself, many of the Cowal villages are included among the sixty period photographs: Kirn, Hunter's Quay, Ardnadam, Sandbank, St Catherine's Well, Strachur, Millhouse, Kames, Tighnabruaich, Glendaruel, Colintraive, Innellan and Bullwood. Most of these communities also had their own piers, many of which are pictured here, and a number of the photographs feature the notorious gunpowder mill at Millhouse, explosions at which could be heard as far away as Dunoon itself. Highland Mary's birthplace is also featured, as well as the pub run by Fitroy MacLean, the original James Bond.
