Stenlake Publishing - Old Coatbridge Villages

Old Gartcosh, Glenboig, Coatdyke and the Coatbridge Villages

Author : Oliver van Helden
ISBN : 9781840335200
Cover : paperback
Price : £11.95

Most of the villages in the vicinity of Coatbridge grew up during the industrial boom of the nineteenth century, when coal, ironstone and fireclay began to be mined on a large scale and a comprehensive transport network developed. Annathill's miners' rows have long gone, but it is seen in the book to be a self-sufficient community with all manner of amenities. Coatdyke was once separate from Coatbridge and had its own identity and landmarks such as the Stewart Institute. Many of Glenboig's buildings became victims of the village's industrial success – mining of fireclay left a legacy of subsidence and demolition. Evocative photos of Bargeddie, Gartcosh, Mollinsburn and Condorrat are also included, along with a view of the Gartloch Distillery at Chryston and a billhead from one of the fireclay works at Garnkirk.
