Grangemouth grew up at the eastern end of the Forth & Clyde Canal, where a sea lock connected the canal with the Firth of Forth. This meant that it could capitalise on the import of goods which arrived from the east and were then shipped through the canal to Glasgow. The docks flourished, whilst industries such as shipbuilding and chemical production were also attracted to the area.
