Nairn stands on an ancient settlement site surrounded by a plethora of archaeological evidence. Vitrified forts, stone circles, crannogs and cist caves compete for your interest. Flint arrowheads and tools have frequently been discovered by sharp-eyed walkers in the area. The photographs here are of a more recent date however ranging from the late 19th to the mid-twentieth century. They show a gentile and dignified town-scape, not substantially altered since Edwardian times, whose imposing buildings have changed somewhat in use but little in structure. Dramatic early photographs of the harbour recollect a time before the Drifter Basin was built when fishing boats could moor all the way up the channel. Beach photographs from the 1930s evoke nostalgia for a simpler time before game arcades when a day at the beach meant sea, sand and sunshine enjoyed with loved ones.
