Nairn stands on an ancient settlement site surrounded by a plethora of archaeological evidence. Vitrified forts, stone circles, crannogs and cist caves compete for your interest. Flint arrowheads and tools have frequently been discovered by sharp-eyed walkers in the area. The photographs here are of a more recent date however ranging from the late 19th to the mid-twentieth century. They show a gentile and dignified town-scape, not substantially altered since Edwardian times, whose imposing buildings have changed somewhat in use but little in structure. Dramatic early photographs of the harbour recollect a time before the Drifter Basin was built when fishing boats could moor all the way up the channel. Beach photographs from the 1930s evoke nostalgia for a simpler time before game arcades when a day at the beach meant sea, sand and sunshine enjoyed with loved ones. The collection is rounded out by views of the two Nairn Links, the ‘West’ and the ‘Dunbar’ and imposing shots of Kilravock (pronounced Kilrock) castle and ancient Cawdor castle of Macbeth fame. Alan Barron’s captions are filled with fascinating and anecdotal insights into the history of the region and the town.
