Yarm, in the old County of Durham, is an ancient place and was the main port on the Rive Tees from the 12th to the 18th century. As it was fifteen miles from the sea, when in the 19th century Stockton developed as a port Yarm inevitably went into decline, although as the ships went the railway came and the town still had some industry including a flour mill, a tannery, paper mills and a vinegar brewery.
